Zilliqa has announced that it is spinning off its blokchain-enabled first person shooter gameWeb3War into its own e-gaming business: Roll1ng Thund3rz. The spinoff will be helmed by Valentin Cobelea, who will also retain his duties at Zilliqa’s still-internal gaming division.
This type of internal incubation isn’t new to Zilliqa. What is new, however, is Zilliqa’s clear stance that they are intending to serve as an internal incubator and accelerator to web3 startups.
In the past, Zilliqa relied solely on their ZilHive incubator to incubate and accelerate third-party developers. Now, it appears there will be an external effort through the rebooted ZilHive and an internal effort through Zilliqa itself.
This move is notable and likely beneficial to the long-term viability of the somewhat stagnant Zilliqa, which has been stuck in market cap rankings between #50 and 100 for years.
Detractors will note, however, that Zilliqa has been financially “tapped” before by their founders and management team to fund their vanity projects (Aqilliz, Metapolis, etc.). The funding came at the expense of unwilling value loss from token investors as previous attempts were fueled by large sells of the $ZIL utility token.
